Since I've been getting !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! lately and I'm still relatively new to the area, I thought I'd ask for some advice on great driving roads in the D.C. area.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I've heard Skyline Drive is great, and I was on the fantastic Blue Ridge Parkway last week for the Audi event. Any other suggestions?

I'd love to find some stuff that isn't too, too far from the District if at all possible. Driving in D.C. is generally miserable but the area is so beautiful that there have to be some awesome roads I can test cars on nearby.*

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks for your help!

*And by "test" I mean drive safely, courteously and well under the strictly-enforced, radar-enforced, camera-enforced posted speed limits like the America-loving patriot I am.

Don't know the DC area, but there's an app called Greatest Drives that lets users share their favourites.

iOS only, I think.

522 and 211 cant go wrong out here. And they are on the way too skyline drive. I will try to find more specific examples and post. I was out there this past weekend when I went to Old Rag. I wish I drove. However riding in my friends mazda 3 2.5 6 spd was nice when I couldnt feel my legs afterwards.

None. Do not drive in DC. I say this from experience, as I presently live in the area.

I try to avoid doing it within the District itself. I got the ATS stuck in both Georgetown University move-in day and March on Washington traffic on Saturday. It wasn't fun.

Dude, if you're around DC and want to grab a beer, let me know. You probably had plenty of time to grab a few on Saturday. It's not like the ATS would have had any opportunity to move anyways.

I was thinking the same thing. I live SE but can go wherever. Shoot me an email, I'd love to hang.

Replying to myself since i cant edit apparently.

Edit: After looking at roads out by skyline drive. Just get off anywhere and go nuts on the side roads. They are endlessly twisty all around skyline. Pretty sure you have to pay to get on skyline. The drive up to the first skyline booth on 211 is amazing. I've just driven that section up and down a few times in a row before.
Basically head west for the hills for better driving roads.

Second Edit: If you want a better way to head south when getting out of northern virginia. Head away from 95 and then loop back around too it right at Fredericksburg. Seems like a longer(time wise) way to go. However if you have ever seen 95 south on a friday night right around manassas you'd wish you went this way instead. Nice back country roads. Speed limit up to 55 two way roads usually clear the whole way.

Here is a better way to get out of northern virginia in case you need to head south on a friday down 95. Just skip it entirely. It will actually save you time to drive way out of your way.

Welcome to NoVa/DC metro traffic is terrible get used to it haha*cries* I avoid DC as a general rule and take the metro whenever I go into town.

I occasionally drive down Rock Creek Park around 10 at night.

That's what Southern Maryland is for.

This area here is a gold mine of lightly-traveled, twisty roads. You'll find more awesomeness a little further south as well.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Great Falls area, check out the area around the Georgetown Pike/Old Dominion Rd intersection, Riverbend Rd is the intersection right after. Not the best roads out there but they're reasonably close to DC, but there are enough twists to assess a fair judgement of the car you're driving. You might see me cruising around on Sunday mornings. Good luck, hope this helped!

Man, you're got to get pretty far from DC to find any good driving roads. Anything close to DC is going to be either too short, too watched and/or too trafficked. I love taking Rock Creek Parkway, but you know as well as I do that it's a mess of crappy drivers and there's almost always a self-righteous bicyclist making sure everyone behind him is doing 15MPH.

Definitely. Rock Creek Parkway is fun but the other drivers and cyclists make it a potential recipe for disaster.

Fairfax County Parkway (or Speedway as we called it) is good for hard launches from a standstill. Not very curvy, but with light traffic, no sidestreets, and little cop presence, it's a good place to practice full throttle launches in between the lights. Basically a series of widely spaced traffic lights on a 55mph speed limit highway.

Notice I'm not saying go street-racing. Just a good place to practice you're 0-60s.

I did this over the weekend. 211 through Luray and then the further 340s was good. The ride back up through Charlottesville and the southern part of 29 was a little congested.

We did this back in June. Nice, long way around to Fredericksburg, VA. You could scoot back up 95N to get home (or vice versa)

We have also done this before. Rt9 is pretty cool. Takes you right through Charles Town, where they have dog racing and an overpriced Casino with table games.

Most of this stuff is two lane country stuff, and makes you totally forgot you are within an hour of this nightmare congestion we call home. Lots of old barns, rural scenery, etc... It's the open, rural Virgina that most people think of when I say I'm from this state.

With questions like "Do you live on a farm," and "You don't sound like you have an accent" makes me think people hear "Virgina" and expect this.
